Storyline
Mikami (Koji Yakusho) is a kind, honest man living in the corner of town. Recently released from prison after a 13-year sentence for murder, he is approached by a young aspiring novelist Tsunoda (Taiga Nakano) and a skilled producer Yoshizawa (Masami Nagasawa), who want to turn the former convict’s return to society into a TV series. In attempting to document Mikami’s storied past and future, Tsunoda witnesses the unthinkable.
Making of the film
The scene in which Tsunoda, played by Taiga Nakano, researches newspaper articles on Mikami’s past crime was filmed at Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library. The lighting was particularly important when shooting him browsing the articles on microfilm using a microreader, so the staff were focused, almost holding their breath, for the shot with a blackout curtain-like cloth covering the machine. Director’s calm demeanor made the shoot congenial from start to finish, leading its success with the library’s great cooperation.
