Grade A Reversal
Drama
Eastern Ward Area
The shrine visited by the Sakurai family on New Year’s in episode 6 of the TBS drama series “Grade A Reversal” (2017) is Higashiojima Shrine in Koto Ward. The memorable fortune drawing scene in which Kanako (Kyoko Fukada) draws ‘good luck,’ Kaori (Mikuu Yamada) draws ‘average luck,’ and Shinichi (Sadao Abe) draws ‘poor luck’ was filmed at the shrine. Five shrines that once existed in the Ojima area were burned down during the Great Tokyo Air Raid in 1945. Later, as part of the town’s reconstruction efforts, the residents also wanted to rebuild a shrine. The five original shrines were therefore merged to establish Higashiojima Shrine. In the summer, a magnificent festival where portable shrines and floats are carried around is held at the shrine.
