Kumagawa Myojin Hall, located on the precincts of Kumagawa Shrine in Fussa City, became the training camp for the members of the Competitive Karuta Club in the movie “Chihayafuru Kami no ku” (2016). Scenes showing the characters having a meal or practicing for the Hyakunin Isshu Karuta Tournament were filmed in the exquisite hall that was built more than 50 years ago. The scenes featuring Ayase Chihaya (Suzu Hirose), Taichi Mashima (Shuhei Nomura), Hideo Harada (Jun Kunimura), as well as a large number of participating extras were taken over the course of three days. The Kagura-den of Kumagawa Shrine, possibly the oldest shrine in Fussa City, is a special place normally used for events such as festivals or gatherings. Kumagawa Shrine is one of the 10 famous sights of Fussa City, and its Main Hall was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Tokyo. Stone statues of the Seven Lucky Gods are worshiped at the shrine, making it a somewhat unconventional place where Shinto and Buddhism come together. Take some time to enjoy a casual pilgrimage at Kumagawa Shrine!
