The Shogi Kaikan hall in Shibuya Ward served as a set for a shogi match scene in “Satoshi: A Move for Tomorrow” (2016). One of the scenes featuring Satoshi Murayama (Kenichi Matsuyama) playing a game of shogi against rival Yoshiharu Habu (Masahiro Higashide) was filmed at the hall. Matches between actual professional shogi players unfold on a daily basis in the hall’s match room which has been the stage of numerous notable face-offs so far. The real Satoshi Murayama also played once at the hall The store (1F) carries shogi boards and pieces, books related to shogi, folding fans signed by professional players, and other such items. The distinct sound of pieces being stricken against the board can be heard in the shogi training hall (2F) where players of all levels, ages, and sexes can be found facing each other off.
