Bridge over Sumida River Crossed by Tsuguharu Foujita

Kiyosu Bridge

Eastern Ward Area
Movie
In the movie “Foujita” (2015), Tsuguharu Foujita (Joe Odagiri) leaves France to return to Japan. On his way back from the Army Art Association, he crosses Kiyosu Bridge which extends over Sumida River. The eastern boundary of Kiyosumi in Koto Ward and the western boundary of Nihonbashinakasu in Chuo Ward are connected by a road bridge designated as Kiyosu, a name coined from parts of the names of both localities. The bridge is a symbol of the reconstruction efforts after the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923, and was built using the most advanced technology of the time. Together with Eitai Bridge and Kachidoki Bridge, which also span Sumida River, Kiyosu Bridge was designated as a national Important Cultural Property in 2007. The elegant suspension bridge is said to have been built following the recommendations of literary artists and painters. The night illumination of the bridge is also a must-see.
