Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
Movie
Shinjuku
In the movie “The Return of Godzilla” (1984), the Self‐Defense Forces’ Super X engages Godzilla with its anti-Godzilla weapons. As a result of the battle, the whole Nishi-Shinjuku area is burnt to the ground, and surrounding skyscrapers are further knocked over by Godzilla. And in the sequel “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah” (1991), the newly built Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Nishi-Shinjuku also ultimately falls victim to Godzilla. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building was designed by world-renowned architect Kenzo Tange, and stood proudly as the tallest building in Japan when completed in 1991. Even today, its observation deck offers a fine view from 202 meters above ground level, and the building is one of Tokyo’s famous sightseeing spots.
