In “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster” (1964), the fifth movie of the series, King Ghidorah flies around the Metropolitan area sky and bumps into Tokyo Tower, bending its top half and making it collapse. In “Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.” (2003), the 27th movie of the series, the radioactive heat ray Godzilla shoots at Mothra who is flying around in the sky directly hits Tokyo Tower and smashes the top part. In “Godzilla: Final Wars” (2004), the 28th movie of the series, Godzilla shoots a radioactive heat ray at Monster X (Keizer Ghidorah) from the vicinity of Tokyo Tower. The resulting blast blows the whole tower to dust.
Tokyo Tower is also known as the place Mothra chooses to spin a cocoon for its larvae, but this scene is part of the movie “Mothra” (1961), a spin-off of the Godzilla movie series.

Chuo-Ohashi Bridge in Chuo Ward is featured in the movie “March Comes in Like a Lion” (2017). In the movie, the bridge connects Rokugatsu-cho, where Rei Kiriyama (Ryunosuke Kamiki) lives, and Sangatsu-cho, where the Kawamoto family lives. The bridge spans over Sumida River and actually connects Shinkawa and Tsukuda in Chuo Ward. The design of the main tower and railings depicts a kabuto (samurai helmet). A number of cables stretch out straight from the main tower to give the ‘cable-stayed bridge’ structure a majestic figure whose beauty is further enhanced under the floodlights in the evening. Among the surrounding skyscrapers and apartment buildings, the bridge seamlessly blends into the modern townscape and can best be admired while enjoying a water-bus ride.

Important Cultural Property Destroyed in the First Godzilla Movie

Featured in the movie “Godzilla” (1954) is the Kachidoki Bridge in Chuo Ward. After destroying the Diet Building, Godzilla heads toward Ueno and enters Sumida River. While making its way to Tokyo Bay, it flips Kachidoki Bridge over and destroys it. Kachidoki Bridge, which was completed in 1940, is one of the few double-leafed drawbridges in the country. The opening and closing operations were suspended on November 29, 1970. The leaves are currently closed. The bridge was designated as a national Important Cultural Property in 2007. In the movie, a radio broadcast describing Godzilla’s progression mentions that it’s moving from Ueno into Asakusa, and then going south into Sumida River, but the Ueno and Asakusa destruction path is not shown on screen.
